The Measurement Maven and Menace of the Month Awards

The Measurement Mavens of the Month:

All the Measurement Wonks out there in Blogging Land...
...that anyone interested in measurement should be reading on a regular basis.

It's about time that the hard-working measurement bloggers of the world got some recognition, so here's a quick list of some of them off the top of my head. This is by no means a comprehensive list, and it's presented here in no particular order. In fact, please feel free to contact me with your own favorites, and we'll add more here as they come in.

Leo Bottary:
relentlessPR

Leo recently wrote a blog post about PR measurement that is so smart we'll just let you read it. What an incredibly good point: If we're ever going to improve our profession, we have to stop whining about the fact that what we do can't always be measured in terms of business results.

Alan Chumley:
Measurement PRoponent / PRomulgator

Alan Chumley always has something interesting to say. My favorite description of him is that he's the only other person (other than myself) who would get excited about a 6-hour discussion of measurement.

Don Bartholomew:
Proving the Value of Public Relations

Don, who often writes as "metricsman," is a fellow member of the IPR Measurement Commission. While we don't always agree, he always has something interesting to say. A recent very popular post of his was about important considerations when selecting a social media measurement vendor.

Avinash Kaushik:
Occam's Razor

Avinash is far and away the most thought-provoking of the measurement bloggers, just read him and you'll see. This post on Google Trends, for instance, is comprehensive and stimulating.

Metrica:
Measurement Matters
Metrica has a number of different contributors to their blog, all of whom are smart and provocative. See this post for yet a another reason why AVEs suck.

Jeremiah Owyang:
Web Strategy by Jeremiah
Jeremiah thinks and writes a lot, and makes lots of connections. Here's a really interesting post of his about Exxon Janet -- or Not-Exxon Janet, as it turns out. --KDP

The Measurement Menace of the Month

David Carriere
Author of 7 Steps to Publicize Just About Anything

David Carriere, author of 7 Steps to Publicize Just About Anything, says that nothing in PR is measureable: "Neither the immediate impact of a publicity campaign or the long-term consequences of its success are actually quantifiable." He suggests that the way to do research is to gather people around the kitchen table and generate discussions. And worse is his recommendation for evaluation: put together a clip book. Talk about a dinosaur! Read more in this review of the book. --KDP
