Can
This Reputation Be Saved?
There comes a moment in every pundit's life when they have to admit that they're wrong, and after three years of publishing, this is mine. Back in June of 2003, we predicted that Martha Stewart's reputation could not be saved. After years of rising earnings and fame, the first anti-Martha book had just been published and her stock scandal was just coming to light. She had not been cultivating a good reputation, and in fact had a series of failed relationships with the media as well as insiders, so we figured there wasn't a chance in hell that she'd survive the media onslaught. She obviously
has better PR counsel than legal counsel. The degree to which her image
has been managed since the day she entered prison is a lesson in PR
perfection. The only little glitch is since she's actually been out
of jail the stock has done nothing but fall. Does that mean that for
the good of her shareholders she needs to go back into the slammer?
