The August PR Weather Report

Sun, Sun, Sun, Here It Comes

by Lindsey Wyckoff

While August is a fairly wide-open month as far as news goes, a little creativity may be required to bring your announcement to the forefront. Most of the people who hail from our segment of the globe are on vacation—be it actual or figurative. Beach, golf, tennis and yacht clubs are filled to capacity. And every parent and child is swamped by a bevy of back-to-school fliers. If your messages can catch the wave of any of these venues, your news is golden.

Unfortunately, regardless of your vacation locale, it will remain difficult to escape those ubiquitous updates on the war that is allegedly over and the infamous—some would say "phantom"—WMD. Still, news-wise, the skies are far less cloudy now that in recent months.

Holidays (so-called) are few and far between (and seem more bizarre than usual, if you ask me). For example, August is National Eye Exam Month and Cataract Awareness Month (am I seeing a pattern here?), Water Quality Month, National Golf Month, Clean Air Month, Romance Awareness Month and, for the flip-flop aficionados among us, Foot Health Month.

If none of those strikes your fancy, never fear! World Breastfeeding Week, International Pickle Week and Air Conditioning Appreciation Week also take place in August.

Opportunities abound. And with the dearth of people around to pick up on any of them, we suggest that you squeeze in all the play-time you can while the field isn't too crowded. Don't forget the sunscreen. And heed our motto for August, "If it doesn't happen in a vacation spot, it doesn't happen."

Jot down these other important dates:

  • August 4: International Friendship Day
  • August 6: Peace Day; a civic holiday in Canada
  • August 13: International Left-handers Day
  • August 16: Elvis died today in 1977 (No, Elvis hasn't just left the beach. Rehydrate.)
  • August 25: Kiss and Make Up Day; a summer Bank Holiday for the UK
  • August 26: Women's Equality Day
  • August 28: On this day in 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his 'I Have a Dream' speech
