The PR Weather Report:

Editor’s Note: Our PR Weather Report pertains to the general PR climate near our company headquarters in the northeastern United States. It’s provided as a service for those who might be considering making announcements in our part of the world. Anyone care to take on the PR Weather Report for their own region and share it with our global audience? We welcome your submissions.

The Forecast for December:
Sunny Skies Ahead

Most corporate communicators consider the weeks between Christmas and New Year’s to be a frozen wasteland for announcements. They assume their publics won’t be reading anything because they’re too busy trimming trees or traveling over the river and through the woods. The holly-jolly result for savvy PR folks is that reporters tend to be more agreeable to taking your calls during this time; they’re not snowed under with the usual work, and they often have a comforting glass of eggnog close at hand.

Remember, however, that you’ll probably find the more junior reporters on duty; everyone with seniority has leveraged it for a week in warmer climes. And anyone doing gift ideas has done them months ago, so don’t try a last minute pitch on that topic, unless it’s for Valentine’s Day.

Dates to avoid:

  • December 25th: Christmas
  • December 26th: Boxing Day
  • December 31: New Year's Eve—the celebrating starts early!
